HI everyone. We have a very interesting political situation out here in CA that will affect the whole world. In 2000 61% the people of the state of California voted yes to Proposition 22 which said that "Only marriage between man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." The courts overturned that decision saying that is was unconstitutional because prop 22 did not make this definition of marriage part of the state constitution. Proposition 8 is the exact same 14 words as Prop 22 and if passed will make this definition part of the state constitution.
Normally the chuch is silent on political matters, but our stakes of Zion in California have received direct guidance from the prophet that we are to be actively involved in fighting for the passing of Prop 8. They have asked us to give of our time and money. There is a coalition of churches that are involved. The website for the coalition is www.protectmarriage.com. Our ward has recieved lists of registered voters for our precinct and zip codes and we are organized to walk the precint going door-to-door to make sure the voters are aware and to poll on how they will vote.
The ward has asked us to give our time from 9-12 last saturday, the 23rd and the 6th of Sept. I went last Sat and will go on the 6th. I also recieved about 20 pages of names of voters in our area code for Rozzy and I to visit in our spare time. This list includes all the registerd voters in Costa Viva (the condo complex).
The ramifications for prop not being passed are catastrophic to society. I am troubled at how the public is so oblivious to this and is frought with complaceny and indifference. "Just let the gays to whatever they want; it doesn't hurt me." Many people have grown so blinded by their quest for tolerance. They put tolerance above Truth.
Before I get further into this let me detail the "catastrophic consequences for society:" If not voted into the constition, sam sex marriage will be normal and legal in Califronia. This sets a precedence for the rest of the nation. But back to CA: In public school, educators will be forced to teach marriage as between any two individuals. Parents, leaving so much instruction up to the public shcool system, will have children brought up as seeing same sex marriage as normal and an option if it turns out to be "their thing."
The danger is in the normalzing of it. With homosexuality being accetped and normal part of society, Sam sex marriage or homosexual orientation will be a choice that each youngter will have to make.
20 years ago, kids didn't discuss on the playground with each other which sexual orientation they were leaning towards. Give me a break. Can you just imagine the following dialogue between Sally and Tommy: "Hey Tommy, you have 2 Daddies right?" "Ya, we're a Homo Family." Do you like boys or girls Tommy?" Well, I think I like boys. I think it would be weird kissing a girl or holding a girls hand. I've always seen my 2 Dads kissing you know." "How about you Sally?" We'll I think I'm going to try to like girls because my parents fight alot and maybe it would just work better with 2 girls you know?
Kids would never even think of this if the "options" were not infront of them in our schools.
OK maybe my little dialogue was far fetcehed, but the point is that giving kids an option will result in more confusion and more homosexuality. Enough kids, by pysiological tendancies or environmental factors, are tempted into this sin on their own. Give them normal options and more will make the wrong choice because they are no longer considering something that is considered abnormal.
This is dangerous and yet the world doesn't care. out of the 15 or so folks I caught at home, about 80 percent said they would not vote for prop 8! One lady I was able to persuade to care and to vote according to her conviction that same sex marriage is wrong.
This issue is exposing where the saints are. As I was calling the EQ to make sure the brothers were to come out, one told me he would not because he was voting against the proposition. Before he told me that I was sharing my testimony of how this direction has come through the prophet and it was our duty as priesthood to fight for this cause till Nov. He told me that the apostles had come out with an email that said we were not to be involved with grassroots. The email he recieved was from the 2nd counselor of the newly released stake presidency. Due to another experience as a missionary, I have learned that you never listen to messages that come from outside you direct local leaders. I recived a copy of the email. It was misconstrued and really didn't matter because it did not come from our priesthood leader.
We must not be ashamed of the truth and what our neighbor will think. We are on the Lords errand here. It is a privildge to be a voice here in the community for the Lord and his program of marriage and the family.
Your feedback appreciated.
